What is Intermittent Fasting?

Intermittent fasting is a diet plan that is focused on when you eat, instead of what you eat.

It combines periods of fasting and periods of eating in a regular schedule.

How to Start

You will start by choosing a schedule, some examples include:

Daily schedules:

14/10: Fast for 14 hours with a 10 hour eating window

16/8 - Fast for 16 hours with a 8 hour eating window

18/6 - Fast for 18 hours with a 6 hour eating window

Weekly Schedule:

5/2 Approach- Eat regularly for 5 days with 2 days a week eating 1 meal between 500-600 calories. These two days should NOT be consecutive.

Intermittent Fasting works because…

The time in between meals is extended, giving your body time to work through the calories you consumed in a day, and then begin using stored fat resources.

So, when can I eat?

You choose a window throughout the day in which you eat. This could be 6-8 hours.

What can I have while fasting?

You can drink water and any zero-calorie drink. This includes unimate, black coffee, and tea!

How long until Intermittent Fasting begins to work?

You will begin to notice the benefits 2-4 weeks after starting. Keep in mind you may feel hungry and/or cranky while your body adjusts to the new routine. Keep going, you will start noticing benefits soon!

I am Type 2 Diabetic, can I Intermittent Fast?

In short, YES!

Intermittent Fasting is often highly recommended by experts and physicians for Type 2 Diabetics. By creating a schedule of eating times, you tend to eat less overall. The periods of fasting allow your body to use fat reserves, which in turn lower blood glucose levels and insulin sensitivity.
